The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1961 with a modest faculty. Over the last 50 years the Department has grown into a major centre of teaching and learning for both Science and Social Science Programmes. Mathematical Statistics for B.Sc. Programme, Applied Statistics, Elements of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics for B.A. Programme and Business Statistics for B.Com Programme are the optional subjects taught here. The B.Sc. course offers combinations of PMS (Physics, Mathematics and Statistics), SMCs (Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Science), apart from this the Department is actively engaged in research by publishing papers, guiding student and carrying out research projects funded by UGC and other agencies. At present there are four highly qualified staff members of whom 3 are having Ph.D. degrees. At present, there are 2 research guides under whom there are five research students are working for their Ph.D. degree. The Department has well equipped computer laboratory. There are two Statistical laboratories and each of them can accommodate about 30 students. Alumni of our Department are working in reputed Universities, Research Centers, IT & BT Sectors and Government Organizations in India and abroad. Mr. Girish Karnad the well-known playwright, essayist and recipient of Jnanapeeth award is an alumnus of this Department.

Apart from this the two Department faculty members are guiding student for Doctoral Degree enrolled under Department of Studies in Statistics, Karnatak University, Dharwad.
