A Brief Account of English Department
The English department of Karnatak Arts College is as old as the college. The department was established in the year 1917, and it is entering into the centenary year. The former member of the faculty are undoubtedly the architects of the department.
VISION :
To create an awareness regarding the need of importance of English in today’s competitive world and make our students globally competent.
MISSION :
Creating a keen interest in language and literature and hereby developing their literary skills and humanistic attitudes.
SALIENT FEATURES OF THE DEPARTMENT :
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI :
At present the department is having two sections. One deals with Language and Literature and the other deals with Functional English. Functional English caters to the needs of corporate world wherein Business etiquettes are taught.
There are nine permanent faculty members in the department. Four of them are Associate Professors and the rest five are Assistant Professors. Each staff member is having his own library in the chamber provided by the college. Students who are in need of reference material borrow from the concerned teachers. This service is provided apart form the Central Library of the college.
Few of our students like Imran Mulla, Akshay Yardi, Praveen Korlahalli, Manjunath Hiremath, Basavaraj Vasan, Chaitra Nagammanavar, Nagaraj Holeyannavar, Prakash Balikai, Sandeep Patil, Imam Korabu, etc have cleared NET and SEL examinations.
The department had great men of letters and teachers like Prof. H. G. Rawlinson, Prof. H. V. Hampton, Prof. Sisson, Prof. V. K. Gokak, Prof. Armando Menezes, Prof. Chandrashekhar Patil, Dr. Giraddi Govindaraj, Dr. Veena Shanteshwar and Dr. B. P. Donur.
DEPARTMENTAL STUDY CIRCLE:
The English study circle conducts several activities every year for Optional and Functional English students. Extra curricular activities provide a platform to the students to exhibit their abilities and develop leadership qualities.

Dramas are like true interpreters of our indications, but there is art required to sort and understand them said Michel De Montaigne and it is fact that the Karnatak Arts College the mother of the Karnatak University and also its constituent college is the result of the dream of its founders Dewan Rao Bahadur Rodda Srinivasa Rao and Dewan Bahadur Artal Rudragouda. These two men dared to dream that North Karnataka, then a part of the Bombay Presidency, needed an educational institution for the students of this region they had to go either to Bombay or to Pune to pursue higher studies.
